ICANN Fellows, Welcome

by Baher Esmat on June 24, 2007

ICANN commenced a fellowships program trial for its 29th meeting taking place in San Juan on June 25-20, 2007. 34 fellows are participating in the San Juan meeting.

I was sitting in a ccTLD workshop yesterday organized for the Caribbean ccTLDs, and I was rally impressed with the participants who are mostly representing ccTLDs of small islands in the Caribbean, and with the level of discussions they enjoyed with ICANN/IANA staff as well other members of the community. Had ICANN not implemented this program, those participants to the workshop wouldn’t have made it to the meeting.

I would like to commend the fellowships committee on their hard work to get the program started, as well as Jacob Malthouse, Liaison for Canada and the Caribbean on his successful leading of this work.

I was a participant of the ICANN Fellowship Progam and confirm that the value of this experiment has been tremendous.

Were it not for this program many of us particpants would not otherwise have been able to participate in the sessions face to face and learn about issues which have an impact on our localities, and on which we should make our input and position know in a public forum.

A great benifit was the opportunity to have one on one discussions with individuals who are at the core of the techncial and policy areas of the Internet and get an insight to the issues and give our Caribbean perspective on these issues.

There was also much value in sharing experiences and information with Caribbean colleagues face to face, which actually led to the formation of regional groupings and identification of sources of regional support and assistance on issues.

I participated in the ICANN Fellowship program and it has been a great experience.
The group gathered together every day and had the chance to meet members of the board and key persons in charge of the technical issues of the whole Internet network.
This progam is a great steps towards a more intense participation of those representatives from developing countries.
I commend ICANN for this great idea and also for the excellent work of Jacob Malthouse and all the ICANN staff for giving us the opportunity of participating in this great meeting.

I m also a ICANN Fellow and I would like to congrats Jacob and Pablo Hinojosa for the logistics and management. In my opinion the fellowship program is very important to allow participation from a broader audience from developing countries.

Note: I wrote an article about The ICANN Porto Rico meeting in portuguese…
