Today, as we mournfully acknowledge the 11th aniversary of his passing away, his spirit is with us, stronger than ever.

I never got to know Jon personally but I salute him for what he did, and for what he represents.

Dear Vint, as you said in 1998 in the RFC 2468: "If Jon were here, I am sure he would urge us not to mourn his passing but to celebrate his life and his contributions. He would remind us that there is still much work to be done and that we now have the responsibility and the opportunity to do our part".

As Vint graciously notes, I and my colleagues at Jones Day had the privilege of working with Jon to create an permanent institution (ICANN) to replace a human institution (Jon Postel). It was almost certainly the most memorable experience of my professional life, at least in part because none of us had any idea of exactly how the ride was going to end when we first got on the road. Jon was one of the most interesting and appealing people I have ever met, and certainly my all time favorite client (despite many other very good ones)! The creation and nurturing of ICANN through its first five years or so of existence, from an extremely fragile new entity functioning on borrowed cash to a stable and effective institution now well established and well funded, was challenging, sometimes highly frustrating, and (like many hard things once done) extremely satisfying. It is always better to be lucky than good, and the luck of having Jon decide to entrust us with creating the successor to one of the most important people (and institutions) in the history of the Internet will no doubt be one of the most important forks in my life's road. So I gladly join in Vint's toast to a great guy who did really important work really well, not for money or fame but just because it needed to be done. Not all that many folks like that around.
