New gTLD Roadshows

by Rod Beckstrom on December 20, 2011

I have spent a lot of time on the road recently. My visits to 16 countries in three months were just one part of ICANN’s busy and successful international roadshows to raise awareness of new generic top-level domains.

Since the roadshows began in September as part of the broader new gTLD awareness-raising effort, ten members of the Board and more than 15 staff members have spoken at over 50 events that ICANN has either participated in or organized. The events have spanned our geographic regions, covering 38 countries, and more are scheduled before the Board-mandated communications period concludes in January.

The goal of the roadshows is to get the message out that a major change is coming to the Internet, and that includes increasing awareness of both the pros and the cons of applying for a new top-level domain. A new gTLD is an opportunity for online innovation but it has risks. Organizations that choose not to apply may need to take steps to protect their brand or name.

We see awareness rising around the world. Media coverage of new gTLDs has been impressive – thousands of articles have appeared around the world since the roadshows began in Brazil on 12 September. The blogosphere and social media platforms are full of commentary.

And in my travels I learned a lot about how this coming innovation is seen around the world. Like the ICANN community itself, views have been mixed throughout the roadshows. We have heard strongly held views on both sides. Most of the discussions were balanced and at every event that I took part in, opposing views were welcomed and often vigorously expressed.

But our goal was never to convince anyone to apply or to sell them on the value of having a new gTLD. It was to give people the facts and let them form their own views.

A great benefit of my travels was the chance to meet so many members of the ICANN community. Dozens of community experts participated actively in the events and in many countries I also met with community members at informal get-togethers.

Many community members also organized roadshow events. I would like to thank them and all our other hosts around the world for their support, engagement and generosity.

Your focus appears to be almost 100% MEAT.SPACE as opposed to CyberSpace (i.e. the Real Internet)

You apparently did not make it to .MARS

How does ICANN avoid the US FTC Franchise Laws ?

Selling Registry (or Registrar) Franchises also falls under the California Business Opportunity regulations.

The Franchise Test is very simple:
1. The ICANN logo or brand is used by the Franchisees
2. ICANN collects fees from the Franchisees
3. ICANN controls the Franchisees

As a Public Benefit California Corporation…
…it would seem to be “prudent” for ICANN to inform the people of
of the State of California that new Top Level Domains will appear
(from .MARS.®) without their interventions…

Some of the new Top Level Domains may become useful on .EARTH.®
…there are at least 26 single letter TLDs and over 1200 two letter ASCII TLDs…the A in ASCII stands for “American”…

January 1, 2012 is a Flag.Day.® for some router software so more IP Address Space will emerge…IPv6 will not be needed…and also RIRs…

Rough consensus and working code…the Real.Internet.® routes around censorship…®

It is interesting that computers can be used to determine “TRENDING” top level domains and areas of interest.

In the ICANN arena, the following topics appear to be the “most popular” (per the info on this blog):

The new DNS software uses First-Right-of-Refusal techniques in the new Resolvers (derived from DNSMASQ).

To resolve a domain like NAME.XX
the name-servers for XX.NAME.COM are queried
as well as the name-servers for NAME-XX.COM.
Eventually, name-servers for .XX are located.
No root-servers are used. All 2-letter TLDs can be auto-located.

Name-servers are also “virtualized” with 60-bit addressing
based on a 12-symbol format LLL.LLLL.LLL and 5-bit symbols.
That removes the need for DNS glue records which has been a
long-term flaw and security hole in DNS.

The RE-Launch of TLDs in the new Peer-2-Peer DNS should be interesting. Digital currency is used to throttle domain renewals.

The new DNS software “preserves” the DNS Top Level Domain in the 16-bit DNS Class Field. That information is normally thrown away in
the old 1980s Legacy DNS.

FYI…
It does not look like ICANN’s .XXX made it to the .USA Library.of.Congress.

The librarian selects the 25 finalists from a pool of public nominations. More than 2, 200 nominations came in this year.
There are currently 575 titles in the Library of Congress’ collections.
This year’s selections are:

By 2013 (or before) there should be no need for IANA or ICANN.

“ICANN must not back down”

As usual, a ONE.Sided view…missing many points…

1. ICANN and the I* Eco.System is an embarrassment to many Netizens – Multi-Stakeholder is an MLM Meat.Space sham
2. U.S. lawmakers and regulators have been suckered by the sham
3. Dissolving ICANN helps to head-off a larger embarrassment
=====
4. New TLDS will appear **without** the I* Eco.System – anyone with half a technical clue (and faith in free markets) knows how that is going to happen. GOOGLE://is.a.verb
=====

Netizens will vote with their feet (and keyboards) and PCs and mobile devices and new (whitespace) wireless networks.

2011 comes to an end with more questions still unanswered…

1. How does ICANN avoid the U.S. FTC (Federal Trade Commission) Franchise laws ?

2. How are /8 IP Address Space Assets (Spectrum) transferred to RIRs with no GAAP – Generally Accepted Accounting Practices records ?

3. Why are U.S. **Non-Profit** companies in the Software Development and Services business with aging DNS client-server technology ?

4. How does the semi-opaque .ORG (non-public stock) companies account for over $56,000,000 in .ORG fees ? Do all .ORG owners have any say in that Governance Structure ?

5. When are the contract RE-Bids for .COM .NET .ORG ? [.COM should be sub-one-dollar at the Registry]

6. Why aren’t there back-up (parallel) vendors for .COM ? to ensure continuity and avoid single-vendor corruption. [Registrars could collectively now clone .COM into the new Peer-2-Peer DNS platform]

7. DNSMASQ has nearly 100% marketshare and major DNS Feeds now come from Google (8.8.8.8), Amazon, OpenDNS and others.
Why is this not mentioned in ICANN forums and announcements?

8. Why would ICANN continue to expand in 2012 now that the DNS industry is clearly more diverse than in 1998 ? ICANN was only formed for a limited time with a limited role. It would seem prudent
to plan for down-sizing and withdrawal. The DNS Industry can self-regulate without ICANN. (It was doing that in 1997)

Looking back to 2002…some can recall history…
==========
March 6, 2002

The Honorable Ernest F. Hollings
Chairman Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation
125 Russell Senate Building
Washington, DC 20510-0001

Dear Mr. Chairman:

I am writing to formally request an oversight hearing regarding the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

Given the recent stunning admission by ICANN President Stuart Lynn that the organization has been mired in endless debates and missed deadlines, this hearing is extremely timely. In fact, Lynn went so far as to recommend comprehensive structural reform of ICANN, given that it is “losing sight of effectiveness in accomplishing our real mission.”

In the wake of such statements, I strongly believe it is time we re-visit the issue and find some solutions to the serious problems facing ICANN and the future of Internet governance. While ICANN is currently a fundamentally flawed and ineffective governing entity, proper oversight by the Committee could help redirect it back to its core mission of ensuring the stable and secure management of the Internet domain system. Obviously, more fundamental questions also need to be addressed, such as whether ICANN is even the most appropriate organization to be tasked with such a critical mission, which is central to our national security.

Thank you for your consideration and your leadership as Chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee.

Sincerely,

/s/

Conrad Burns
United States Senator

You fought hard in many countries for gTLD Roadshow who need the support and generosity of many people who aim to progress in the Internet field, but I am sure you will succeed one day if it continues to struggle and work hard for the full support of many countries.

As the .WORLD turns…and 4096 other top level domans…

2012 should be a pivotal year as new protocols and address spaces allow (educated) people to escape from http://TheBigLieSociety.com

As people “discover” the 4096 Trending Top Level Domains via their Wireless Access Points (ZOOM://ZOOM) the old 1980s legacy DNS should become less and less relevant.

The U.S. dollar will no longer be the reserve currency and the domain name system has its own Virtual Currency. Digital Wallet factories should now be shipping all the info you need…

To enlightened Netizens…

2012 should be a major turning point for the .NET evolution.

Many Netizens have worked hard to prepare the technology to save others from http://TheBigLieSociety.com

Scaling the .NET may require a Less.Is.More approach. The laws of
physics and information theory still prevail. The 160-bits you send
in your packets can address more devices. Less bits can be wasted on
IANA overhead.

The plan to build a new .NET without IANA is one of the only ways
to escape that endless game. You may start to see WIFI access points
with the new ZOOM://DNS. The SSIDs should be obvious.

If Netizens do not act in the face of EVIL they deserve what they get…

Jim Fleming 01.03.12 at 7:26 pm

Summary to date…3 days into 2012

1. The .USA FCC continues to build at least TWO new .NETs – One for first-responders and one with their new Whitespaces DataBase “Registries” (including Microsoft, Google and Neustar)

2. The .USA NTIA is clearly capable of leading the construction of a new .NET

The IANA’s File of iTLD Requests

Date: Thu, 5 Dec 1996 12:47:44 -0800
From: postel@ISI.EDU
Subject: The IANA’s File of iTLD Requests

Hello:

Here is a preliminary summary of the file of messages, including domain
name registration forms, received by the IANA since Septermber 1995.

In most cases if a reply was sent at all it said something like:

While there is much discussion of a process for establishing
new registries and new top level domains taking place, no
conclusions have been reached as yet.

Request sent to the IANA for a new top level domain will be
filed with the many other requests. There is some considerable
possibility that this particular request will not be granted
(in simple words — don’t plan on it).

This list was put together by reviewing the messages accumulated in a
mail file set up for this purpose. It is likely that a few requests
were overlooked in the process of setting up this file. If you made a
request that is not listed here, plase forward a copy of your original
message to IANA@IANA.ORG. Please put in the subject line of the
message “New TLD Request” and the specific iTLD involved. We will look
again into our old mail to confirm the requests and add it to this
summary.

–jon.

NOTE is one of FORM, MAIL. FORM means that the IANA mailbox
received a domain name template for this name. MAIL means that the
IANA maibox received a message about this domain name.

The following are suggestions or claims or maybe jokes about top level
domain names that i saw on some mailing list or other. These were not
addressed specifically to the IANA so i do not consider these to be
pending requests with the IANA.

Under NOTE, LIST means that i saw a message about this domain name on
a mailing list and i forwarded it to the IANA mailbox to make a note
of it.

Governments seem to be unaware of the “Strings” expected in the gTLD expansion. In 1999, ICANN chose to ignore the list [below] that was AUTO-Generated by computers from the .COM zone.

In the new Slot-Based DNS there are 4096 slots. A 6-bit Alphabet is used to compute all of the 12-bit TWO-Symbol gTLDs. Those are the
anchor tenants for the slots.

In 1998 I told Jon Postel we would develop software and systems to free the world from the IANA.
…his comment was “that will cost billions of dollars”

my response was….”So ? it will be worth it…”

We now have $30 devices with DNSMASQ that dominate the DNS market…
http://thekelleys.org.uk/dnsmasq/doc.html

this is only the tip of the iceberg…there is really no longer any need for ICANN or IANA…or the ISOC

IPv4 made the list as the transition to IPv3 was made without a hitch…
0100 to 0011 with 00 as VV version 00 and 11 as SD 1 to 1

http://Jack.THE.CAT
…was #1 on the list

Maybe next year ICANN will be on the list ?

“A great benefit of my travels was the chance to meet so many members of the ICANN community.”
======================

This would appear to imply that members of the so-called “ICANN Community” are MEAT.SPACE humanoids (mammals) that like to rub elbows with a Frat.Boy.

Does the “ICANN Community” include Netizens in CyberSpace ?

Have you met any Netizens ?…in your “global travels” ?

Are you aware of the new DNS that Netizens have designed ?
