Estamos muy contentos de poder recibir a la comunidad de ICANN en la Ciudad de México el próximo mes de marzo. En ICANN, junto con AMIPCI, NIC-México e ISOC-México (las organizaciones locales que forman el comité organizador de la reunión), estamos trabajando a todo vapor para que esta sea una reunión exitosa, la primera del 2009 y la primera que tiene como sede a México.
¿De qué se trata la reunión de ICANN?
ICANN coordina a nivel mundial el sistema de direccionamiento de Internet (el DNS) a través de un modelo participativo basado en el consenso. Cualquier persona interesada puede participar e influir el proceso de toma de decisiones de ICANN. Los gobiernos, las empresas, la comunidad técnica y la sociedad civil tienen todos la misma oportunidad de expresarse en lo que respecta a la elaboración de políticas.

On 10-11 September 2008, ICANN hosted its third Asia/Pacific regional gathering in Seoul, Korea. The regional gathering approach to broadening participation in the ICANN process for gTLD registries and ICANN-accredited registrars was first introduced in February 2005 in Brussels, Belgium. And, since that time, ICANN has conducted annually three outreach events – one each in the Asia/Pacific, Europe and North America regions. As the participation in the community continues to expand to all parts of the world, ICANN anticipates adjusting the model to include other areas such as Latin America/Caribbean Islands, South America, Africa and the Middle East.

Press release in Russian about the continuous cooperation between ICANN and the .ru ccTLD Coordination Center (in Russian):

ICANN опубликовала официальное заключение, касающееся Промежуточного обзора (Midterm Review). В этом документе содержатся итоги разработки соглашения JPA (Joint Partner Agreement), которое должно быть заключено между корпорацией и Министерством торговли США.
В опубликованном заключении (pdf) говорится о том, что окончательная версия JPA станет очередным шагом на пути к независимости ICANN и выводу системы доменных имен (DNS) из-под контроля Правительства США.

There have been some reports in the past few days about possible “division” of the Internet in Russia, tied in with speculation that the forthcoming Cyrillic domain names will be used to grant the Russian government more control over its citizens. The source of this speculation appears to be an article published in UK newspaper The Guardian. That article was then reproduced in a number of Russian news articles, most of them quoting a direct translation published by SecurityLab.

Some of the Russian media reported in July 2007 that the Russian government plans to build its own Internet, independent of the World Wide Web, which will service Russia and the CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States) countries, such as Armenia, Moldova and the Ukraine.
